On 16 March 1801 David, Jr. purchased 50 acres for 12 pounds, 10 shillings from a David Miller on the waters of Cove Creek, southeast of the "Brooker's". David lived on Howard Gap Road in present -day Polk County in his declining years. He is thought to have moved there in the 1820s from the Cove Creek area. Both Saluda Magazine and the book "Sketches of Polk County History" by Sadie Smathers Patton, tell of an Englishman, David Dalton, who lived on Howard Gap Road in Polk County, and whose family "married and intermarried" with the Morris, Thompson and Rhodes families., as being the progenitor of the Dalton's in Henderson and Polk Counties. It is believed that "Englishman" to have been David Jr's father, David, Sr.

David Sr., is believed to be the immigrant on this line from England. He and his sons fought in the Revolution and three sons are known to have received pensions. He lived in Albemarle County, Virginia before 1763; According to the pension applications of John and William they joined the army from Albemarle County, Virginia. Subsequently the family removed to Burke County, North Carolina, where they were in constant conflict with the British and Indians. Because of the heavy fighting, David decided to send his wife and daughters, along with his youngest son, Thomas to Rutherford County, North Carolina, where the children's uncle, William Grant lived. Thomas found the area a hotbed of Tory support, and became a spy for the Patriots. By 1782, the family had reassembled in the Mountain Creek area of Rutherford County. David, Sr. is found on the tax list for that year. In 1786 he bought 70 acres on the North Fork of Broad River from a Thomas Morris.
