    ~~~~~
    (The following is from an extended interview between Chuck Griep -husband of Valarie Jean Chasteen- and Madie Mae Moore Chasteen on July 4, 1989)
    PART 1: How Madie met and married Lovell Arnold Beam:
    Madie and her sister Peg (Margaret) went to see Henry Johnson, a cousin in New Albany, IN. They went to Fountain Ferry park in Louisville, KY where there was music and a dance band. She danced with Lovell Arnold Beam (whose uncle was Jim Beam of whisky fame and his brother was General Roseham Beam during WW-2. He was a bird Cononel at Boca Raton, FL in 1946 ). He took the sisters back to the cousin's house in a car. Later Lovell came to Indianapolis to find Madie. He stood on the corner of Washington and Illinois Streets, hoping to see her. He didn't find her, so he looked in the phone book for her sister Ida. He called Ida who invited both him and Madie over to her house. They dated for just 6 days and then married. Madie was 17. The date was August 2, 1922. They were married at a magistrate's at the courthouse in Indianapolis, IN with Ida signing for Madie. They moved in with his mother in Louisville, KY in a house on Story Avenue. He worked for Ewing's milk company as a delivery man.
    Later they moved to 1020 South 2nd Street in Louisville. On November 23, 1923, Jack Lovell Beam was born at home. Dr. Mathhews and the mother-in-law delivered the baby.
    The last picture show that Madie went to see was at the Kentucky Theater in Louisville--it was "Three Weeks".
    Lovell Arnold had TB and was admitted to a sanitorium. Madie got a job there. At this time Lovell had a vision of Jesus and said that he could only get well because of Jesus. They moved to Indianapolis and lived with Madie's sister Ida. Lovell slept on the porch to get more air. Lovell was going to be treated by Palmer's Chiropractic School. On his way to his first visit there, he went into an evangelist's meeting in a tabernacle. They needed a volunteer to play the piano, so he volunteered and they ended up praying for healing for him. He stayed until midnight, worrying Madie to death. They told him that he and Madie should fast and pray and then come back to the next night. Madie didn't want to go because she cussed all day (because the baby was bad "fingered the table" she had just waxed). She had never been to a Pentecostal church before. They want anyway and got saved, but he was not healed. They continued to go to church at the tabernacle.
    They heard about another church at the tabernacle, Laurel Street Tabernacle. The people there had had a vision of a young couple who needed help and interpreted this to mean Lovell and Madie. They rented a cottage and furniture for them and got Madie a job. At this time Madie started growing her hair to be a real Christian. Lovell asked her never to marry anyone else. Once while going out to get some water for Lovell, Madie had heard a voice which said "I have many things to tell you, but you aren't able to bear it". Three days before Lovell died, he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and released her from her promise not to marry again. Lovell died on Feb 21, 1925 when his son Jack was 18 months old. They buried him. Jack was put into formal daycare at $2 a week and Madie had him on weekends.
    PART 2: How Madie met and married Chester Arthur Chasteen:
    Chester's mother invited a group for a get together, including Madie. Chester and Madie got paired off. Chester's family went to the same church as Madie, but Chester was backslidden and didn't go to church. Madie was taking care of a mentally disturbed young girl for a rich family. After the get together, Chester started showing up at church and Wednesday prayer meeting to court Madie. Madie found out that Chester smoked - it was the last time. They were eventually married in the minister's living room by Brother Osborne on Sept 1, 1927.
    PART 3: Chester Arthur Chasteen
    Chester worked for the railroad (New York Central - unionized) during World War II - he couldn't quit because of the war. He worked on a 3-man riveting gang. As soon as the war was over, he went to work for International Harvester. They voted in the union after he had been there for six months.
    PART 4: The birth of John and Paul
    On a Saturday, Madie went on a streetcar and bought ten gallons of pineapple to can on Sunday morning. At 5:30 A.M. on Sunday, Madie asked if Chester had kicked her in the back. Chester went out to find a telephone. He found a total stranger that had a phone and called a cab and the hospital. John Thomas was born on the way to the delivery room at 6:15 A.M. Madie held John while Paul was being born at 6:30 P.M. "Paul had a veil over his face", which meant that he would be smart.
    PART 5: A visit to some cousins
    Madie's mother Anna Yarbrough didn't let her kids associate with her sister's kids because they were so poor. Once Madie and Chester went to New Albany to see Mary (Yarbrough) Nail and her kids, without knowing how to find them. Madie saw a stranger and thought it was her cousin - it turned out to be George Nail. He told them where he lived. He was hauling groceries in a wagon and met them at home.
    PART 6: Some proverbs of Madie's
    Slower than the itch Slower than molasses in January Went sideways to keep from flying So old it was growing whiskers
    As welcome as the flowers in May As fine as frog's hair Sweet one
    Subject: FARWELL TO MY BROTHER STEPHEN LEE CHASTEEN
    I talked with Stephen Lee Chasteen' sister-in-law, Shannon, today. She informed me that my brother, Steve, passed away. He was born on 21 August 1940. He was a soldier, a teacher, and business man in Portland OR. He is survived by his wife, Julie, his children: Scotty, Yolanda, Chuck, and Stephen. Steve and Julie were married on 22 Jul 1967 at the Presidio, San Francisco, CA
    I am so happy to have attended Scotty's wedding in Las Vegas last February(2006). Steve invited Loretta and me along with my twin brother, John, and his wife, Margaret for lunch at his RV in Las Vegas. Julie fixed a gourmet lunch. We had a great visit.
    Stephen had just sold his business and retired full time. He was an avid golfer and collected baseball cards. When Yolanda was involved with softball, he and Julie were deeply involved with managing the ball league and the concession stand supporting the softball league.
    When Steve was 11 years old he spent the summer with Loretta and me while I was attending Purdue University. He would caddy for golfers on the Purdue golf course. He is responsible for me becoming a postage stamp collector. I would ask the foreign students to give me the stamps from their letters for him. I would only give him about 50% of the stamps with the idea of giving the others later. Guess what? Later never came.
    For the last several days I have told myself that Stephen Lee can't be gone. He is my youngest brother and I'll miss him forever. I had visions that he would kick dirt on my grave. Several times when we would go to walking events in Vancouver, Washington we would stay with Julie and Steve. They were such a happy couple. Julie would prepare a special breakfast for Yolanda. I remember in the early sixties when we bought a lot on 34th Street in Indianapolis next to the house my twin brother was building Steve came over to help me cut down all the undergrowth. We had long talks about his future. At that time he was pursuing a career as a singer. I can't remember if he volunteered for the military or if he was drafted. In any event he was stationed in San Francisco, California where he met the love of his life, Julie Astudillo.
    After the military he went to Indiana University. Later he was offered a teaching job in Maryland. For a few weeks he stayed with us in West Springfield, VA. while he looked for a house for him and Julie. I really treasure those memories.
    I now remember we went to visit Steve and we all went to the race track where they were racing the sulky. We paid $2 on each and lost it all. It was so much fun. Julie's dad had an entry which we bet on and it was winning when it blew a tire. It was my plan to visit him next spring as part of our 60th wedding celebration.
    My memory of Uncle Steve was just before he went into the Army. I was less than 10 years old so it has a few holes in it. He lived with Grandma and Grandpa on Ritter Street and he was getting rid of his stuff that he couldn't take with him. There were record albums that he asked if I wanted. He gave me several 45s by Elvis Presley and the LP, Mr. Tambourine Man by the Byrds with Bob Dylan. I just about wore them out listening to them but still have them. He kept his car at our house for a while. It was a maroon Mustang and he gave my sisters and me a ride in it. As others have said, I thought he was incredibly cool. He was only 5 years younger than my dad. But dad didn't drive a Mustang!
    Here are a couple old good pictures of Steve. Sorry they are so big, even after reducing them. In RAC4.jpg Steve is the closest person on the right side, in front of my dad. It looks like maybe a Thanksgiving dinner in a garage? I'm guessing Uncle Jack took the picture. Anyone with a memory of that event, speak up.
    MMM27.jpg is a church picnic picture, a lot of the Chasteen clan are scattered around. I've found Madie, Chester, Rebecca, Jim [my dad], and Steve. Steve is the child 5th from the left in the front row and I'm guessing he was well under 10 years old by the looks of my dad [over on the end of the front row with a grass stain on his knee!].
    Thanks for sharing the information about Uncle Steve. I too remember their visit when we lived in Springfield. I think they were at my high school graduation, but maybe they were just visiting at that time.
    I remember taking the bus to visit them in Teaneck, NJ when I was in high school. I think this was in 1970 or 1971. I believe they were staying with Julie's parents at the time. I read a book while visiting about a dog or cat that got lost, but made its way back home after a very long journey. It is funny what we remember. I do remember how cool we thought Uncle Steve was back in the early 1960's. He was at Granny C's cabin with us for a visit.
    I am sorry that I won't see him again and regret it has been so long since our last visit.
    I remember Uncle Steve at Grandma & Grandpa's cabin. He brought his guitar and sat and played his guitar and sang to us kids. At least I think he had a guitar. We thought he was "the cat's pajamas." He must have been in his 20s. I thought he was so cool. (I think my sisters did also.) If I remember correctly, he may have been in a band of some kind at that time.
    The last time I saw him was when I went to the train station with him in Washington, D.C. (when we lived in West Springfield). I drove his little car back to our house. I was about 17 or 18 and it was an interesting trip driving that sports car through D.C. and back home. I know I was nervous. It may have even been close to rush hour.
    I do remember him during my youth while still living in Indiana. He was very handsome and had a beautiful voice. I loved to listen to him sing and can still hear his voice it in my mind. When he and Julie were married they rented a flat in the city (San Francisco) near the Marina and Wharf district. They didn't own a car and walked or took public transit everywhere. I was attending college in Santa Cruz and they invited me for a visit. Uncle Steve met me downtown near his office and took me out to lunch. I remember we were to meet on the square, downtown. I was very nervous, not being a city girl, and afraid I wouldn't be able to find him, but there he was just where he said he would be. He was so handsome in a perfectly tailored suit, briefcase in hand looking very distinguished with his dark hair and goatee. It was a wonderful weekend; we ate, laughed and walked everywhere. They were the perfect couple and it was clear to me that they were very much in love. My husband, Jeff, was an avid sailor and loved boats. Jeff and I took Uncle Steve on a bay cruise in our 23 Canadian Racing Sloop. He loved being out on the water, caught the fever and bought that boat from us. He was passionate in his endeavors and diligently researched everything he took on.
    Uncle Steve was a gentle soul. He had a beautiful smile that warmed every room he entered. His laugh was contagious and he had a delightful sense of humor.
    These are my fondest memories of my Uncle Steve.
